Noobs with Aprilia Caponord 1000

Hi, Im Alexandre,

I purchased an 2003 ETV Caponord 1000. I do not have the bike yet. I only saw pictures. The bike looks very clean, only 19 000 km. The bike is mostly stock, except that the former owner removed the catalyst converters without any remapping.

After reading the reviews of reliability and electrical problem on this forum, I wonder if I should not cancel the deal? Do you all have problems with your Caponord? You freak me out guys!

I do not have time to play the mechanic. I'll buy a v-strom if it's simpler. I like the look and performance of the Caponord, but if I have to spend time searching parts on ebay and play the electrician... not sure it's a good idea.

What do you think?

That looks a lovely example. After buying my Capo I read the forum posts about the various issues and thought perhaps I'd bought the wrong bike. I hadn't had any issues but the main issues were common and it seems a little pre emptive modification can save a lot of issues later. It's not difficult to do and there are many posts and guides here which clarify the process. Plastic fuel connectors which embrittle with age, for which Aprilia themselves offer an uodated high pressure fuel line with metal coupling. The low pressure line it is easy to fit the CPC metal couplings to.

The other recommendation is to fit a Mosfet rectifier off a CBR600 while at the same time modifying three connector plugs on the loom which are known to be problematic. I replaced with waterproof metripack 630 connectors. As Stu says, you've read the info, now filter it and decide if its for you, don't panic, it appears daunting at first but if you are not one to ever get your hands dirty then thats a decision for you. Of course a good mechanic/auto electrician could sort out these common issues if supplied with the right info and parts.

That's the basics for a reliable bike. One thing you do get with the Capo, is a huge amount of advice and support from the forum and a well documented search library.

cheers
Nito

Agreed. Capo has a bit more soul or character compared to the jap bikes. They can be a little tempremental but most of us are like minded and can put up with the quirks as the ride is so good when all is well. Some Capo's run without any issues but they are probably a little rarer. Do you know if the previous owner has done any of the upgrades? As most of the others already said.. If you are not keen on working on bikes (we call it bonding) you are better off with the Strom

I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy

Hi Alexandre,

I documented the mods I did to mine and there is a lot of useful info, photos and comments in this thread here (though there are many like this one);

There is no doubt its difficult find a better bike for the price than a Capo. I also understand Your sentiments regarding the forum and how scary it can be to own a capo. Even when you have done the basics, and got all the help from a bunch of incredibly tuned in blokes, the randomness of what can still og wrong can be daunting. The quality of the Electrics was not from the get go and my 2004 is now getting on to 13 years old. Even With help from the wizard from Watford and a local capo mechanic it still does some strange Things. It has been suggested that i should get soemthing more reliable, because i do about 12 000 kms a year, Mountains. commuting and long trips to Britain. But selling it would be hard, and investing in something newer expensive. The engine is bulletproof and ishall invest some dollars in a quality check of the wiring and tubes later this year. I plan on having it for yonks more years, as long as a good mechanic can help me out. Bikes are always horses for courses and a lot of guys have a back up, i do not have that luxury and feel i live a little on the edge

Current:
2004 capo - the grey one
Oberon clutch slave, 4cm extra foam in riders seat, RR back shock , Hagon progressive front springs, 4 techauto coils, AF1 fuel line and metal connectors, both brown connectors replaced with direct wiring, kappa racks and Big Husky 46l cases, hepco becker junior top case,mandatory capo stickers, cbr honda mosfet rectifier.
