Q8 Vs Urus
When Audi debuted its latest performance SUV, the RS Q8, at the 2019 LA Auto Show, we were introduced to the fastest SUV in the world. That's because the Audi RS Q8 broke the all-time lap record at the Nurburgring. What's interesting about that fact is that one of the previous Nurburgring SUV lap record holders is actually the RS Q8's sibling — the Lamborghini Urus.
Both the Audi RS Q8 and the Urus are based off of the same chassis, use similar engines, have the same transmission and even similar chassis technology. Under their very different looking bodies lies very similar underpinnings. The major differences lie in power (the Urus has 640 hp and the RS Q8 has 591 hp) and their price tags. The Urus starts at over $200,000 and, while RS Q8 pricing hasn't been released, the Audi should be between $100,000-$150,000.
At that point, though, most customers that can afford the Audi RS Q8 can probably also afford the Urus. So, the real question is, which do you buy?
The Lamborghini Urus is the more powerful can and is a shockingly capable SUV to drive. Though, with the Audi RS Q8 being faster around the 'Ring than the Urus, it's not too shabby to drive, either.
Where the Urus is more appealing is in its interior design and its engine noise. The Urus might be an SUV that uses an Audi-sourced V8 but it sounds menacing, like an Italian exotic should. Which is sort of hilarious in an SUV. It also has a great interior that looks and feels special. It might have some similarities with the Q8 but it's still quite a bit different.
Aside from that, though, I think the Audi RS Q8 is the one to buy. It's going to be significantly cheaper, it's clearly the faster car on a track, it looks significantly better (the Urus is just not a good looking car) and it's every bit as fast on the road, despite having a bit less power on paper.
Personally, I'm not one for high-performance SUVs. In fact, I'd take the Audi RS6 Avant over both of these cars in a heartbeat with even so much as a second thought. However, if I had to choose, I'd take the Audi RS Q8. In fact, I think I'd take it over any other fast SUV on the market.
